Giving Voice to the Alternative Narrative
The dominant narrative is killing us literally: Peter Block

Most of the work that’s really constructive in the world is held invisible, but there’s a growing field of new journalism that’s changing this, and that is reason for profound hope, says renowned author and consultant Peter Block.

The people actively building up, transforming and creating new things would rather do the work than promote it, says Peter.

And the mainstream media is fixated elsewhere.

“Every news story, every headline and most of the Internet conversation is saying what we have is not enough, there’s something wrong and they need to fix it,” Peter, a Cincinnati resident, tells Axiom News.

He adds he believes this dominant narrative, anchored in the belief that we live in a world of “absolute scarcity, absolute self-interest and absolute individualism,” is literally killing us.

Peter notes in the U.S., mainstream media is controlled by a handful of corporations, and the story they’re telling is designed to market fear, amplify conflict and paint a destructive picture with what they call news. This is leading to an increasingly polarized and fundamentalist culture.

Why?

“We live into whatever it is that we’re speaking about,” says Peter.

The author of game-changing books like Community: The Structure of Belonging and The Answer to How is Yes, Peter is also the creator of the Abundant Community, which seeks to awaken the power of families and neighbours through various means, including a different kind of journalism.

Abundant Community stands for a different storyline, one that is about gifts, hospitality and associational life of neighbours.

The group aims to produce stories like this, as well as support that segment of the journalism world that shares a belief in this storyline.

Peter adds he sees the work of Axiom News as part of this movement as well, giving voice to the alternative narrative.
